There are currently 54 different Islands in The World of Portal Knights, each with their various Creatures, Plants and Resources. Most islands are reachable via portals, with the exception of a couple islands that are only accessible during special events, the 16 vacant slots which can be filled with custom, flat islands (buy-able from merchants), and the Rainbow Island which is a part of a DLC pack.
The Islands that count toward the 54 are;
- 11 for Area 1 (10 islands plus the boss island Worm Pit).
- 16 for Area 2 (15 islands plus the boss island Dragon's Lair).
- 16 for Area 3 (15 islands plus the boss island World's End).
- 2 for the islands (The Gate and Portal Knight's Sanctuary) that are just after defeating the Hollow King.
- 2 that are event rewards (Fields of Balance and Isle of Toblis).
- 6 for the islands of Faynore
- The last remaining island is Rainbow Island from one of the DLCs.
The islands purchased from merchants do not count towards the 48 islands.
Throughout the updates many islands got new NPC's, custom structures or even complete rework. Biggest changes happened with the v1.2 update, when: Horseshoe Holdout, Cape Carvel and Starspires; were modified with the introduction of Boss Quests into: Shrieking Sands, Broadside Bay and Starspires respectively.
